Viewers Choice: My Next Retrospective

Posted by Amber Ahlborn

Many months ago I posted an in depth retrospective of the Metroid Prime Trilogy. It was truly a labor of love and I thoroughly enjoyed putting it together. Well, I'd like to do another one, and you get to vote for what I cover.

Obviously, I can only write about games I've played, so I've compiled a list of what games and series I'm interested in covering. This isn't a list of games I consider the best, just the ones I feel like I have something to talk about.

1) The 3D Legend of Zelda series (will cover Ocarine of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Phantom Hourglass)

2) Beyond Good & Evil

3) Prince of Persia (will cover Sands of Time, Warrior Within, and The Two Thrones)

4) Vagrant Story

5) The 2D Metroid series (will cover Zero Mission, Super Metroid, and Fusion)

6) Yoshi's Island (will cover Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story, and Yoshi's Island DS)

7) Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver series (will cover Soul Reaver, Soul Reaver 2, and Defiance)

8) Okami

9) ICO and Shadow of the Colossus

10) Ratchet & Clank series (will cover Ratchet & Clank, Going Commando, Up Your Arsenal, and Deadlocked)

11) Jak & Daxter series (will cover Jak & Daxter, Jak 2, Jak 3, and Jak X Combat Racing)

12) Sly Cooper series (will cover Thievius Raccoonus, Band of Thieves, and Honor Among Thieves)

13) Star Fox series (will cover Star Fox, Star Fox 64, Adventures, Assault, and Command)

14) Chrono Trigger

Please make your choice and post it in the comments section. After 30 days have passed I'll tally up the results and announce my next project. After that, all I ask is patience. When I did the Metroid Prime retrospective I replayed all three games, took notes, and worked on the post for quite a while. This will be a major undertaking and I hope you enjoy the results.

Vote!

I say Okami. I haven't seen that one talked to death. :P Most of what I hear is just "OMG SO AWESOME" without going into a lot of specifics.

in order of how much you need to do them:

1. Yoshi's Island (PLEASE)

2. Star Fox

3. 2D Metroid

the original articles were awesome, so I'm excited for more.

My vote is for Star Fox; it seems like the most complete series here that I have interest in, yet did not really get into later games past SF64.

My vote is for Beyond Good and Evil - I think it's got a lot to talk about, so seeing someone elses POV on it would be interesting.

I say Jak and Daxter. It's such a bizzare series. It starts off as the PS2's flagship kiddie franchise, and turns into tough as nails platformer.

I loved the original articles, Amber. I'd love to read your thoughts on the 3D Zeldas (though I have very mixed about them myself) and on the 2D Metroids (though of course we have our differences on Zero Missions :) ).

Legend of Zelda.  Such a great series, and ripe for introspection.

I'd love to see a vagrant story one, only played that for a little while as a rental back when it came out.  the kain series would be awesome as well.

I would be most interested in Star Fox, Jak & Daxter, and Legacy of Kain just because those are the games on the list that I've never really gotten into but always wanted to.

1 - Metroid (what about Metroid 1 and 2?)

2 - Star Fox

3 - Zelda (#1 in my heart, but Link gets enough hype as is.)

I may end up being the only one to vote vote this way, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Those are games with an art style worth talking about if there ever were any.

Now that the galaxy is at peace (give or take a conflict here or there), she works as a freelance writer for various sites and magazines. Based in Toronto, Nadia prizes the certificate from the Ministry of Health declaring her tick and rabies-free.

Bob Mackey is a grad student, writer, and cyborg, who uses the powerful girl-repelling nanomachines mad science grafted onto his body to allocate time towards interests of the nerd persuasion. He believes that complaining about things on the Internet is akin to the fine art of wine tasting, but with more spitting into buckets.

Joe Keiser has a programming degree from Johns Hopkins University, a tiny apartment in Brooklyn, and a fake toy guitar built in the hollowed-out shell of a real guitar. He writes about games and technology for a variety of outlets. One day he will stop doing this. The day after that, police will find his body under a collapsed pile of (formerly neatly alphabetized) collector's edition tchotchkes.

Peter Smith is like the lead character of Irwin Shaw's The 80-Yard Run, except less athletic. He considers himself very lucky to have this job. But it's a little premature to take "jack-off of all trades" off his resume. Besides writing, travelling, and painting houses, Pete plays guitar in a rock trio called The Aye-Ayes. He calls them a 'power pop' band, but they generally sound more like Motorhead on a drinking binge.
