Street Fighter HD Makes Me Freak Out

Posted by Peter Smith

As promised, yesterday brought me my first in-person look at Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, and if such a thing is possible, I am now even more psyched than I was. The only thing I can say against the game is that crying in front of Capcom's cute publicist Melody made me look foolish. (Tears of joy, folks. Tears of joy.) Internet complaining about the redrawn art, I can now say with assurance, is thoroughly misplaced; the notion that higher-resolution graphics would make the animation appear jerky couldn't be further from the truth. Though only Dee Jay, Ryu, Ken and Akuma were selectable in this build, they looked beautiful, meshing perfectly with the newly luscious backgrounds. And the new widescreen mode is zoomed closer to the action, so the characters approach Art of Fighting stature on-screen. Even at this pre-release stage, it looks gloriously polished, and I truly relished handing my colleague his ass multiple times in a row, even more than I usually would. The future's looking bright, friends. (Mel — call me.)

Correction: that photo is Morgan in a state of awe of having his ass HANDED TO HIM by you, despite his rather impressive display of smack talk.

Great to read positive comments on HD Remix given the amount of complaining regarding the delay in redoing the character art properly. Capcom would never be content with putting out a poor version of this game, and I'm glad that they were willing to make the difficult decision to hold off on the the final version until everything was clicking properly.

As long as the game looks and plays well (I'm already banking that it sounds great, since we at OC ReMix handled the soundtrack), I'll be a very happy man once HD Remix drops. Nice to read your thoughts, Peter!

He believes that complaining about things on the Internet is akin to the fine art of wine tasting, but with more spitting into buckets.

Joe Keiser has a programming degree from Johns Hopkins University, a tiny apartment in Brooklyn, and a fake toy guitar built in the hollowed-out shell of a real guitar. He writes about games and technology for a variety of outlets. One day he will stop doing this. The day after that, police will find his body under a collapsed pile of (formerly neatly alphabetized) collector's edition tchotchkes.

Peter Smith is like the lead character of Irwin Shaw's The 80-Yard Run, except less athletic. He considers himself very lucky to have this job. But it's a little premature to take "jack-off of all trades" off his resume. Besides writing, travelling, and painting houses, Pete plays guitar in a rock trio called The Aye-Ayes. He calls them a 'power pop' band, but they generally sound more like Motorhead on a drinking binge.
