Here Comes the Science: 60TB of Everquest Server Logs

Interesting news courtesy of Ars Technica: Sony has donated a big hunk of user behavior data from the Everquest 2 servers. Surely a Herculean task awaits those who have to sift through the data in order to glean useful information. That's 400,000 users over a four year period.

To give a concrete example of the data's utility, Srivastava described how he could explore the phenomenon of customer churn, something that's significant for any sort of subscription-based service, like cell phones or cable TV. With the full dataset, the team can now track how individual customers dropping out of the game influenced others who they typically played or interacted with. Using this data, the spreading rate and influence factor could then be calculated, providing hard measures to work with.

Gamers Don't Crave Gore, According to New Study

Obvious to most of us, but comforting nonetheless, a new study proves yet again that moms and girlfriends have nothing to worry about when their loved ones play violent video games:

"For the vast majority of players, even those who regularly play and enjoy violent games, violence was not a plus," explained Andrew Przybylski, a University graduate student and lead author of the study. "Violent content was only preferred by a small subgroup of people that generally report being more aggressive," added Przybylski, however, even these hostile players did not report increased pleasure when playing more gruesome games.
